State of Play Recap

Yesterday Sony released its State of Play, a video presentation like Nintendo Direct. In it, we saw what is coming in the near future for the PlayStation ecosystem. With the recently introduced PSVR2, people were expecting something interesting.

Let’s take a look at the most memorable things about the State of Play.

Resident Evil 4

Certainly, the most anticipated game of all the list. Capcom presented Resident Evil 4 in the State of Play, and we got to see more about this upcoming title.

One of the best game franchises of all time recently went through the remake/remaster treatment. Ever since it’s ‘experiment’ with Resident Evil VII and Resident Evil VIII: Village, Capcom is bringing back a more familiar 3rd person format that the original Resident Evil 4 popularized.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the most beloved games in the gaming community, and has been ported to many consoles, including PC. It stapled the franchise into a new, more modern audience. Its sequels kept the format until today.

Capcom started remaking older titles like Resident Evil 2 and 3. They have had a fair amount of success, and they are truly well made. They have stunning visuals, amazing audio design, and gameplay mechanics that feel modern and akin to its genre.

If you have the chance to play these remakes, please do so; they will give you hours of fun.

It was logical to remake Resident Evil 4 with this new format. However, the game was already in 3rd person. Capcom did not just want to update the graphics; they wanted to implement quality of life things into the game, and also modernize the gameplay.

It is a very delicate process to remake such a gem like RE4. You don’t want to remove or add things that will ruin the experience to faithful fans.

What we saw from Capcom in the State of Play was spectacular. The game holds the new standard for remakes and it certainly keeps the essence of what it was back then.

They also announced the famous Mercenary Mode for the game, and a demo to be released soon.

Street Fighter 6

It is no secret that the game is coming out. Capcom has already announced Street Fighter 6 on other platforms. Today they revealed 3 new fighters for the game:

  • Zangief

  • Cammy

  • Lily

People were expectant for this announcement since we had no word that staple fighters like Zangief or Cammy were going to be in the game. This announcement comes more as a relief rather than excitement.

The true new fighter that is coming is Lily; she is from the Thunderfoot tribe, which is the one that T. Hawk belongs to. We can be almost certain that she is T. Hawk’s daughter. Although her move-sets and fighting style are very different.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice

The game perhaps received a lukewarm reception. Many were criticizing the game because it looked generic and it featured a battle pass. Many were exclaiming: ‘Yet another game with a battle pass’.

It is understandable that we are saturated by games that have this kind of loop mechanic. As gamers, we either pick a couple of games that we know we’ll complete its battle pass, or we just don’t unlock any of its loot.

The ‘good’ thing here is that the loot is just cosmetics. It seems that the industry is well aware of the negative connotations battle passes have. Adding exclusive weapons or perks to a battle pass will break the game in the long run.

Here is a little Behind the Scenes from the State of Play. Be the judge if you see yourself enjoying this type of game.

Destiny 2: Lightfall

It has been a while since we have seen some new content being released for Destiny 2. To bring back the hype, Sony released this game on PlayStation Plus with its latest expansion included, The Witch Queen.

This will certainly help unify the gamer base, and bring everyone to a similar hero level, and also have similarly leveled weapons and armor. Good move, prior to its latest expansion which is $59.99. Yikes.

The trailer showed a little bit of what the story is going to be about. Keep in mind that Lightfall will be the penultimate chapter in the saga, before it resolves on The Final Shape, to be released in 2024.

PSVR 2

Here are some of the PSVR 2 games that are worth mentioning:

Jurassic World: Aftermath Collection

Updated for PSVR 2, with all its shenanigans like volumetric lighting, the game will also include all the stories.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners - Chapter 2 Retribution

The game certainly looks great, making use of the power the PSVR 2 has. Too bad Chapter 1 was released for the regular PSVR, and they are not retro compatible.

People were hoping to have Chapter 1 included since it’s impossible to play the whole story unless you have both VR headsets.

Humanity

In this game, you control a dog that is leading crowds to its destination. The concept seems quite unique and it will be released for both PSVR 1 and 2; also, on PS4 and 5.

Synapse

It might look like a generic FPS for VR at first, however, it will fully exploit the technological advancements and power the new PSVR 2.

Keep in mind that the controllers have haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The headset itself has eye tracking. Hopefully a game like this will set the standard for future releases that fully exploit the benefits of the PSVR 2.
