Pato O'Ward Wins Detroit, Climbs To Top
Patricio "Pato" O'Ward won his second race of the season in the double header Detroit GP. The Mexican driver climbs to the top of the championship after 7 races ; his performance has been outstanding so far, with regular points finishes and very solid races.
O'Ward started 16th on a very tricky course with little room for overtakes, however a very solid pace, and a good race strategy quickly put the young Mexican in a position to fight for a win towards the end of the race. He made a nail-biting move on Newgarden with just a few laps towards the end.
Apparently Newgarden's strategy to stretch his stint did not pay off and became a sitting duck with quite a substantial amount of laps left.
O'Ward dedicated his win to his teammate Felix Rosenqvist who had a serious crash on the Saturday race; thankfully the Swedish race driver escaped with no major injuries.
“I talked to Felix this morning, and the important thing is that he’s OK, but I told him, ‘I’m going to win it for you, so, this is for him and for Mansour.”
Alex Palou, who won the Alabama Grand Prix opener is second in the championship only 1 point below O'Ward. The IndyCar championship has seen 7 different winners in 7 different Grand Prix, with O'Ward being the 1st driver to repeat a win on Detroit which features 2 races (Ericsson won the Saturday race).
