Tune in on April 13: PlayStation State of Play Dedicated to Final Fantasy XVI.
The PlayStation: State of Play will be 20 minutes long, featuring its gameplay. Tune in on April 13 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 11pm CEST.
PlayStation's official Twitter account announced its highly-anticipated State of Play, featuring more than 20 minutes of gameplay for Final Fantasy XVI. The game developed by Square Enix is the next iteration of one of the most successful RPG franchises in videogame history.
The upcoming State of Play will be exclusively dedicated to Final Fantasy XVI, so don't expect any bombshells or hidden announcements for other games. The showcase will feature more than 20 minutes of gameplay, shedding more light onto what we already know.
What we know so far
In general terms, the game is a standalone version, like most Final Fantasy games, meaning that you don't need to play previous titles to enjoy the story; in fact, almost all of the Final Fantasy games are not even related. Don't be discouraged by number XVI, its not a sequel.
The game will feature Eikons, which are weaponized creatures that can be summoned by Dominants. Basically, they're like a 'stand' in JoJo's Bizarre Adventures. 'Eikons are the most powerful beings in Valisthea', where 6 realms have emerged because of the Mother-crystals.
You will use a varied roster of Dominants, each capable of summoning these mythical creatures. The story deals with power struggles, revenge, and tragedy. Apparently, the game will take a dark turn, compared to other titles.
Hands-on
Some industry-related outlets have had the chance to get their hands on an early build of the game. According to some, the game will have different summons to aid you in the game's action-oriented combat. Sort of like in The Witcher 3, you will be able to use certain attacks that might help you with crowd control, or keep enemies at a distance.
The game also features an apparently approachable combat, and leveling system. This sort of thing has happened in previous 'remakes', like in Final Fantasy VII. It is a great approach by Square Enix to implement a lot of flexibility that enables players to craft their RPG experience as they prefer.
Everything ready for its June 22 release
At the moment the game has already gone gold, but don't discard a day-one patch, should you get a physical copy of the game. Keep in mind that games are now a service, and their final versions usually come out at the end of their expected life cycle.
Here are both digital edition pre order bonuses.
Final Fantasy XVI comes out on June 22, 2023 as a temporary timed exclusive on the PlayStation 5.
