3 Things We Learned from the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix

A race full of action and drama might have left Lando Norris with a bitter aftertaste.

The 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix was quite exciting, to say the least. The Formula 1 Championship saw yet another winner, Oscar Piastri, who added his name to the list of seven different grand prix winners this season.

The win might have come at a price, tensions were evident in McLaren because race leader Lando Norris had to yield his position with a few laps remaining. Here are 3 things we learned from the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.

1. McLaren is going to have to learn to manage its drivers.

Lando Norris got pole position on Saturday but come race day he lost his place to Piastri during the first lap. The Australian driver had a somewhat comfortable lead, but a strategic error in the pitstop enabled Lando to make the 'undercut' and regain it.

Piastri's frustration was evident, he was pushing the car too much and made a few mistakes that put him slightly off the track. He was pleading to be put back to the lead of the race. Norris on the other hand, had great pace, and was ordered to give the place back.

The British driver did what anyone would have done. He reluctantly agreed on the condition that Piastri caught up to him. As mentioned above, the Australian rookie was making mistakes and could not get close enough to Norris.

The team started a pathetic row of negotiations with Lando. First, they told him to watch the tires; that he was going too fast under certain turns. Degradation was not the issue obviously; the British driver was consistent with his lap times.

Then the team told him that it takes a team to win races and that he was going to need Piastri in the future. This sort of emotional manipulation put Norris in a difficult moral dilemma. He ended up artificially giving Piastri his first win in Formula 1. Some purists were upset about McLaren's version of the 'Multi 21'.

Lewis Hamilton achieved two hundred podium finishes

The British multi-time world champion reached yet another milestone. He became the first driver to ever achieve two hundred podium finishes. Quite a feat to be honest. We often take for granted these statistics, but they really show how great of a driver Lewis Hamilton is.

This could not have come at a better time. It seems that Hamilton is getting back to his best form, just before he joins Ferrari in 2025. The Scuderia from Maranello is desperate for a driver of his caliber. They don't only need a big name; they need him to deliver results.

Championship-wise, the result was great for Mercedes. George Russell had a disastrous qualifying and could not fight at the top alongside Hamilton. A podium finish puts a cold press to the team's otherwise terrible grand prix. They were able to minimize collateral damage, allowing them to re-strategize for the next race, on Belgium.

We know Mercedes does not have a great car, like in previous years. Despite that, both drivers have been getting satisfactory results throughout the season. Hamilton is the one that had been struggling to fight at the top, but the upgrades have been working to his favor.

The multi-time world champion comes from a race win at the British Grand Prix, and securing his two-hundredth podium finish at Hungary serves as a motivating factor for the next race at Belgium. Spa might be a different story due to the track's features, but everyone wants to win this historic grand prix.

3. Verstappen is getting desperate with his car

Red Bull is currently in a very peculiar situation in the championship. Despite their lead in both the Constructor's and Driver's Championships, the last few races have been a pain, to say the least. They have witnessed their comfortable lead in both championships dilute substantially.

The reason for this comes in two parts: on the one hand, Perez has been getting incredibly poor results, and Verstappen is fighting races further back than he would like. Red Bull seems to be running some sort of experiment with Perez, and the upgrades are not to Verstappen's liking.

The Dutch driver was complaining of severe understeer during the race. This is extremely frustrating for him because he prefers the opposite, a car with slight oversteer, due to his driving style. Red Bull might still be trying to fully understand the upgrades, in order to set up the car according to Versappen's preferences.

The problem is that he is getting more and more desperate with each race. During this race, we saw him make a very risky move trying to overtake Hamilton, luckily for both, it did not end in tragedy. Verstappen overshot a dive bomb maneuver, and both car's wheels interlocked; Hamilton's front-right with Verstappen's rear-left. The Red Bull's rear axle lifted off and sent Verstappen ahead of the hairpin in turn one.

Luckily, the Red Bull did not end on top of Hamilton's head like in Monza. Some say the halo saved his life on that occasion.

The more desperate Verstappen gets with his car, the riskier moves we will see him make. There is an adage in motorsports saying that winning drivers don't know how to drive with other cars ahead of them. This might be the case with Verstappen. We saw him make a bad move when Norris tried to overtake him at the Austrian Grand Prix. Now he tried a risky move on Hamilton with no reward, and luckily with no greater damage.
